چکیده

Using the local-density approximation, calculating the Hellmann-Feynman forces, applying the direct method and deriving the phonon dispersion relations, the stability of the perovskite-like structures of MgSiO3 at T = 0 have been studied. The cubic Pm3̄m phase shows a dispersion-less soft phonon branch spreading from the R to M points of the cubic Brillouin zone. This soft branch persists up to high pressures of 150 GPa. The low-symmetry phases I4/mcm and Imma, P4/mbm can be considered as a result of the soft mode condensation at the M and R points, respectively. These phases prove to be unstable at T = 0. The experimentally observed Pmnb phase is a consequence of the intersection of Imma and P4/mbm space groups. Thus, it can be regarded as a simultaneous condensation of two soft modes: one at the M and a second at the R high-symmetry points of the cubic Brillouin zone. The phonon dispersion relations of Pmnb show that this phase is stable and its optical phonons appear above 4.0 THz only. Ab initio thermodynamics of MgSiO3 perovskite at high pressures and temperatures.

Using quantum-mechanical simulations based on density-functional perturbation theory, we address the problem of stability of MgSiO3 perovskite to decomposition into MgO and SiO2 at pressures and temperatures of the Earth's lower mantle. We show that MgSiO3 perovskite (and its post-perovskite phase) is more stable than the mixture of oxides throughout the pressure-temperature regime of the Earth...

Ab initio elasticity and thermal equation of state of MgSiO3 perovskite

We have used high-temperature ab initio molecular dynamic simulations to study the equation of state of orthorhombic MgSiO3 perovskite under lower mantle pressure^temperature conditions. We have determined the Gru«neisen parameter, Q, as a function of volume. Our state-of-the-art simulations, accurate to within 10%, resolve the long-standing controversy on thermal expansion (K) and Gru«neisen p...

Electronic spin transitions and the seismic properties of ferrous iron- bearing MgSiO3 post-perovskite

[1] The elastic constants of post-perovskite of chemical composition Mg0.9375Fe0.0625SiO3 and Mg0.8750Fe0.1250SiO3 have been calculated at 0 K and 136 GPa using ab initio methods. For both compositions studied, iron remains in a high-spin state below 180 GPa at 0 K. The effect of spin state on elastic properties is small. Logarithmic derivations of isotropic wave velocities and density with res...

Modeling the melting of multicomponent systems: the case of MgSiO3 perovskite under lower mantle conditions

Knowledge of the melting properties of materials, especially at extreme pressure conditions, represents a long-standing scientific challenge. For instance, there is currently considerable uncertainty over the melting temperatures of the high-pressure mantle mineral, bridgmanite (MgSiO3-perovskite), with current estimates of the melting T at the base of the mantle ranging from 4800 K to 8000 K. ...

Ab initio Study of Simple Mg-Ene Reactions of Propenyl Magnesium Halides and Ethylene (Type-I Intermolecular Reaction)

The insertion of an olefinic C=C bond into a metal-carbon bond is of potential interest as a preparativeroute to new products and as results of C-C coupling reactions to organic compounds. The allyl compoundsof Mg, react with an olefin by inversion of the allyl group via a six center transition state. These precyclicreactions may be one of the most important classes of organic reactions. The re...
